Company introduction

Epigram Books was started in July 2011 to champion Singaporean literature. In the years since we have expanded our catalogue to also include stories from around Southeast Asia.We have published more than 400 fiction and non-fiction titles, which range from novels to children’s books, graphic novels to cookbooks, memoirs to short story collections, many of which have won awards both locally and internationally.

Publishing experience

As a managing editor, my primary role is to oversee trade and contract publishing projects from start to finish. I lead a team of editors who work across various genres proofreading, editing and copy editing. To ensure timely completion and adherence to budget, I am responsible for creating timelines and publishing schedules. I maintain regular communication with other departments like marketing and sales to coordinate our publishing and production efforts. Additionally, I contribute to the creative management of our existing works and handle submissions for awards using
Submittable.
Apart from my role as a managing editor, I also serve as an associate editor for picture books. With my experience of 22 years teaching children’s literature courses at the college and university levels, working with children’s content is an absolute joy. As an associate editor, I have the privilege of acquiring and developing 8-10 new picture books annually. I take pride in discovering emerging writers and illustrators and assisting them in honing their skills. My responsibilities as an associate editor encompass all aspects of editorial work for children’s books, including writing manuscripts, structural and line editing, and collaborating with designers and illustrators from concept development to final artwork. I am also in charge of crafting compelling copy for book covers, metadata and other marketing materials related to our picture books.

Main interest

As publishers, we strive to play a conscientious role in producing picture books that go beyond mere entertainment. My aim is to create thoughtful works that cater to children’s developmental needs while igniting a passion for reading and learning. In my role, I am dedicated to nurturing and advancing the realm of children’s literature in Singapore. This involves seeking out fresh voices among authors and illustrators and guiding them to refine their talents and skills. I am also very keen to collaborate with other media platforms by expanding our reach and impact. What sets us apart is
our unique position as an English language publisher that portrays Asian characters, and I hope to extend and share this concept to diverse markets worldwide.

Experience related to this year’s topic

For quite a while now, I have been using various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools like Grammarly, PerfectIt, and ProWritingAid, often unaware that they fell under the umbrella of AI. But it was through my interaction with ChatGPT that I came to recognize AI’s remarkable effectiveness. I have found it particularly valuable in the realm of content creation. Prompting it is like working with a colleague. It has helped me refine content, develop ideas and even provide new direction.
