Publishing experience

With a background in Indonesian Literature, I joined Bhuana Ilmu Populer Publishers in 2015 as an editor. Fromthe beginning, I handled educational comic and novel books, both domestic and translated foreign books, in several genres such as romance, mystery, thriller, fantasy, slice of life, and many more, which targeted middlegrade and young adult readers.
As time goes by, my interest in social media led me to develop the Instagram account @bhuanasastra with the team, in addition to the general publisher’s account, @ bipgramedia. Hence, apart from editing manuscripts, I also brainstorm content for social media publication.
One of the successful authors I managed is Valerie Patkar, whose first book was published in 2018 and has since released 6 best-selling novels. Together, we developed a fictional universe called “Dunia Loversation,” which is a collection of Valerie Patkar’s works. It will not only be limited to book form but can also be expanded into other formats. Currently, “Dunia Loversation” provides a reader community through a WhatsApp group, serving as a platform for fans to gather, share stories, and connect with each other.

Current projects

Currently, we are actively developing the Dunia Loversation project while simultaneously working on Valerie Patkar’s upcoming book, scheduled for
publication in 2024. Additionally, we have formed a collaboration with Gramedia Writing Project (gwp.id), a webnovel platform, to publish the webnovel in a printed book format.
Aside from these projects, I am also responsible for learning and development, particularly for editors. I will evaluate editors’ abilities and providing some training to improve their performance and unlock their potential.
But first, it is important for me to identify what should be learned, including standard and technical aspects related to our work, as well as exploring new subjects. We expect our team to enhance their abilities and adapt to future.

Main interest

Being in the creative industry not only requires us to be creative and imaginative, but also able to adapt to all the changes and challenges. In relation to my daily work, I am also interested in popular issues in the society to be included in books. For example, when people nowadays are starting to realize the importance of mental health, we also provide related books.

Experience related to this year’s topic

The advancement of AI has provided significant benefits to my work in the editorial field. So far, I have utilized AI for book title inspirations, book recommendations, book cover design ideas, data checks, and text translations.
However, the AI-generated results are still limited to the surface level and give us recommendations, rather than making final decisions. Moreover, this technology is still being developed, so indeed the usage of AI still need to be “deep-learned” to achieve optimal results.
