Company introduction

Officially established in 2005, Nhã Nam is one of the leading private publishing companies in Vietnam. We are  publishing books of all genres, but most well-known for literature and children’s books. Besides publishing, we are running a bookstore chain and a printing factory. We have over 200 employees and 45 of them are editors.
A number of statistics: 18 years of publishing books; over 2500 titles were published, 300 new titles per year; 16 bookstores in Hanoi, HCM city and Hai Phong, including 3 books and coffee shops; over 80 events each year, including book launch, workshops, book talks, exhibitions, book festivals.

Publishing experience

1. Editor of Nha Nam Culture and Communication Jsc. Head of Vietnamese Books Division, incharge of domestic contemporary literature and non-fiction books. Editor of Nha Nam’s significant authors. Winning many Nha Nam’s prizes of Person with outstanding achievements and Book of the Year.
2. Visiting lecturer on Literature editing at Creative Writing and Journalism Department, Hanoi Culture University in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2003. Speaker on editing and publishing at the Publishing Department, Academy of Journalism and Communication; Philology Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
3. Author of books
– In mother’s arms, published in March 2021.
– Swing on top of an almond tree, published in June 2022. Winning Dế Mèn Prize 2022.
– The third book is coming.
4. Organizer, speaker and facilitator of many talks and workshops about books, literature, publishing, and editing, among others. Contributor of many newspapers, TV and voice programmes.
5. Teacher of online courses on publication and editing (2021, 2022). Member of Judges for Dế Mèn Prize 2023, a prize to honor children’s literature, held by The thao & Van hoa Newspaper.

Current projects

* For literature
– Two works by two very important writers of Vietnam: Nguyen Ngoc and Nguyen Huy Thiep. Nguyen Ngoc is a writer who experienced two wars in Vietnam and his writing deeply depicts life that he and his colleagues lived in that very hard time. Volume by Nguyen Ngoc includes two parts: essay and memoir. Nguyen Huy Thiep was considered a king of short stories in modern Vietnamese literature. But what we are going to publish is a volume of his poems which were written when he was young. His family found those poems in old documents when Thiep passed away.
– A volume of poems by Nguyen Vinh Tien, famouspoet and song composer.
– A novel by young writer Hien Trang
– Series of Le Bich: Picture books for young adults. This series includes many volumes with different themes, in which the author uses pictures and funny short texts to ironically depict a trend, a lifestyle, a phenomenon in society.
* For non- fiction
– Self help: Living as a river; We are stars. These books will share ideas about the way we live in busy society, and what makes us happy.
– Know-how: Guide Book for Using Man; Guide Book for Breaking up.
– Research: Story of Tea, a big book about the history of tea all around the world; The Beauty of Paltry Landscape, discussing how we can enjoy the beauty of nature.

Main interest

– I really care about temporary literature in Vietnam. I observe new works by Vietnamese writers, feedback from readers, prizes in all types, sale numbers in the local market and presence of Vietnamese authors in other languages. I always hope that works by Vietnamese authors can obtain more attention from local readers and can go beyond the borderline.
– I am concerned about typical trends of publishing life in Vietnam: the development of self-help books, the presence of luxury books, the rising needs of reading about psychology and mental health, the habit of using audio books… And of course I am watching how AI can affect the publishing industry.

Experience related to this year’s topic

– I have read books and articles about using AI in the publishing industry. I have joined talks about AI that is considered to be a new power in publishing. I have received some scripts about Chat GPT.
– I have used AI writing tools that my partner offers to understand how generators write, what are their pros and cons, and how they develop from time to time.
– I used an AI tool to collect articles of authors to build books.
