Bhuana Ilmu Populer (BIP), which was established on September 22, 1992, is engaged in publishing. BIP grew to become one of the major publications in Indonesia under Kompas Gramedia. Apart from being a publisher that publishes books for wide publication, BIP is also co-publishing for writers/institutions who need book writing or printing services. The current President of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo, and the former president of Indonesia, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, are among the users of the BIP co-publishing service.
BIP focuses more on publishing children’s books, such as educational comics, fairy tales, picture books, and activity books for toddlers and children. However, BIP also does not rule out non-fiction books on health, business, leadership, motivation, self-help, and school support books. Every year, BIP publishes more than 300 book titles, 60% of which are children’s books. BIP has an imprint that publishes books with special categories, namely Bhuana Sastra for novels, Genta for Christian books, and Qibla for Islamic books.
With the slogan “Passion for Knowledge”, BIP is dedicated to publishing books that help people learn on their own. Since its primary readers are children, BIP takes great care and seriousness in creating highquality children’s books. BIP is very aware that there is a responsibility in educating the younger generation to prepare them to build a better intellectual society in the future.
BIP will continue to expand its market by building international partnerships, one of which is by always visiting international book fairs, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Seoul Book Fair, London Book Fair, Beijing Book Fair, and Bucheon International Comic Festival. Several BIP children’s book copyrights have been sold to Vietnam, Malaysia and India. These books are local books written by Indonesian children’s book authors. This collaboration strengthens BIP’s identity as a leading children’s book publisher in Indonesia.

Publishing experience

My journey in publishing started on 2013. I got into publishing because—omit like all the 90s generation—I love reading books. At that time, I started by becoming a copy editor in Bhuana Ilmu Populer (group of Kompas Gramedia). I was then put in the local children’s book editor team. After a few months, I was trusted to edit books as an editor. It’s great to learn about children’s books and work with children’s book writers. After 1 year of working, I was transferred to the novel editor division. But it seems that I’ve hooked with children’s books. So, I returned to the children’s books editor team.
Since then, I started editing children’s translation books too (until now); from baby books with various features, educational comics (like 90% are from Korea such as Stingy Family from Jaemibooks Co.), picture books, chapter books, picture dictionaries, activity books for preschoolers, kids’ novels, children’s encyclopedia, children’s moslem books (under our imprint, Qibla) and any kinds of popular knowledge books. I’m thankful that the publisher where I work has been working with so many publishers worldwide so I have opportunities to edit (and also read and enjoy) children’s books from different foreign languages, such as English (UK and US), French, Korean, Belgian, Chinese, and more.
I also had been managing BIP’s Facebook account for 3 years. The times when somewhat Facebook have so many users. I have also attended various seminars and workshop related to writing, editing, social media, marketing strategy, and finance. In 2018, I attended Seoul International Book Fair 2018 as a buyer. I’ve actually been reviewing lots of Korean children book before, but it was my first time to attend a business meeting in Seoul. It was nice to meet Korean editors.
In 2019, I had an opportunity to learn from Room to Read America, a global non-profit organization that focuses on working in collaboration with local
communities, partner organizations and governments to improve literacy and gender equality in education. BIP was invited to become one of the publishers that facilitates the creation of children’s books with an early reader level (For Google’s project). These books were then distributed free of charge to many public elementary schools throughout Indonesia. During the process of making picture books in that project, I learned a lot more about picture books and fell more and more in love with children’s books.

Current projects

In 2023, I’m still reviewing children’s books manuscripts written by local authors and foreign languages. With my college editor (and of course with the manager), I regularly observe and evaluate the individual abilities of all editors (once in a month). That way, gaps or weakness in each editor can be resolved so that managers can map out team needs based on the strengths and weaknesses of each editor. I also arrange training and workshops in the field of writing and editing for all BIP editors. I’m also responsible for new editors by supervising daily desks and transferring knowledge. Since last year, I’m also developing a new sub-imprint (going to be an imprint if the project works) which is focusing on good picture books for early readers that
entertain and inspire children. The story I look for is not only from local authors but also from other countries. So, I would love to meet other publishers in Korea that meet our new project goal.
I also often work together with read aloud communities in different cities in Indonesia to spread awareness of he importance of reading to children. I give them fun and inspiring picture books and make some read aloud videos on social media like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. As any other editors, I also make material about books that I edit to be posted on Instagram feeds, stories, and WhatsApp.

Main interest

In publishing, for some times, I have edited novels, adult nonfiction, as well as education textbooks. But my passion is in children’s books. Apart from being an editor, I have also written children’s short stories and published them in children’s magazines in Indonesia. I also like to share knowledge about what kind of children’s book manuscripts editors are looking for to writers. I share knowledge via WhatsApp (before Zoom existed), my personal social media, and various webinars held by BIP and writing communities. Indonesian authors love to be spilled about what points an editor become interested in a manuscript. That’s my favorite topic.

Experience related to this year’s topic

As another editor does, I use app tools to avoid plagiarism such as Check Plagiarism and Small SEO Tools for English manuscripts and Duplichecker for Indonesian. For the use of AI, my team and I got quite a lot of inspiration for proper copy editing. For example, to find translated sentences that do not match the author’s original idea.
I also often use Chat GPT to find ideas for children’s book titles (which mostly have common themes but different concepts and content); to help me write blurbs, ideas for making Tiktok/Instagram video reels about book’s content I edited, or brainstorming to find ideas to direct my authors’ manuscripts. I also have tried view tools that generate children’s stories with the help of Artificial Intelligence, such as storybooks.app and wemadeastory.com. But I only have tried the free ones. I think, AI has helped a lot of editors or anyone who is working in writing field. But it is not as perfect or as brilliant as human’s brain though.
