Company
Sakyejul means ‘4 Seasons’ and it further means that the company values the meaning of growth while all the things grow as the seasons change. In addition, the philosophy of the company is that ‘the bowl of a book contains the spirit of the times .’
The company was established as Humanity and Social Science publishing company in 1982, and it boasted its power by publishing the series of ‘Nice to Meet you, Logic’ (Wee, Gi Cheol), which recorded the million-seller after going beyond its field toward children, youth and juvenile literature since 1990 with the motto of ‘publishing valuing the meaning of growth’. ‘The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly’, written by Hwang, Seon Mi, is the first Korean book translated by Penguin Books in USA, and also has been loved by so many readers in Korea for a long time, as a result, it has expanded its area into the play, musical, and animation movie, etc. This work, exported to 39 different countries, was listed up in the ‘Amazon Book of this Month’ in USA, and became the best-seller of Waterstones and as well as one of the ‘Book of this Month’ selected by Waterstones Book Club. It also was listed up in ‘Top 10 Best-sellers of Independent Publishers’ among the books of Independent Publishers across the UK, and was selected as ‘the Book of this Year’ chosen by Bookseller, the UK publishing company. In Poland, this book was selected as ‘the Best Children’s Book of 2013’ among all the books including books written by Polish writers as well as translated version of foreign writers while being admitted with its excellence of literature. Sakyejul now not just translates foreign books but also publishes Korean children’s books, which cover diverse generations, including ‘The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly’. In Korea, the company presented ‘1318 Books’, the series of the ‘teenage literature’ for the first time, and created ‘Sakyejul Literature Award’ to excavate new youth literature writers. This year, the company published ‘YOLO YOLO’, the 20th anniversary edition of 5 Korean and 5 translated books, among 110 books published over the last 20 years to commemorate 1318 youth book creation.
Sakyejul turned to publish Korean children’s picture books, beginning with the German picture book, ‘The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit’ in 1993, and discovered the best seller writers such as Seo, Hyun, Kim, Sang Geun, and Park, Jeong Seop, etc. It also published the series of ‘Job and People’, which is a job guide book for children by letting children realize the value of work. It also made its effort toward history field by publishing ‘The Museum of Everyday Life of Korean History (12 volumes)’, which visualized ordinary life of ordinary people like a museum, not just dealing with the political history of the rulers. Therefore, the company received the awards related to planning and editing, including ‘Korea Culture Publishing Awards’. Furthermore, the company published ‘Atlas series’ to observe historical events based on the map, and also published the major humanity books, such as ‘Sociology of World Affairs’.
Sakyejul has published 1,300 books in total up to now, and is presenting roughly 70 new books a year. Its field includes children’s picture book, youth and juvenile literature, the liberal arts of children and the youth, humanity, history, and copyrights. The proportion of Korean vs. foreign books is 7 vs. 3, and the number of company members is 35
