| Kodansha Ltd. is the biggest and famous general publisher in Japan. Established in 1909 by Noma Seiji, it started first in the name of Dainihonyubenkai and called ‘Kodansha’ in 1911, and after that, passing through Dainihonyubenkai Kodansha’, it became ‘Kodansha Ltd.’ in 1958. Total circulation of Kodansha’s 9 magazines in 1931 reached around 5.3 million copies, forming a magazine kingdom. After the Second World War, it started publishing pure literary magazine like 《Gunjo[Large group of people]》, weekly magazine 《Sukan Gendai[Weekly modern]》 《Sukan Shonen magazine[Weekly boys magazine]》, and encyclopedia, general books, textbooks and also advanced to audiovisual materials. Entering into 1990s, it published nearly 40 kinds of magazines and several books as well, and began joint publishing business in association with 40 plus foreign publishers. Currently nearly 1,000 employees are working there and is one of the most aspired work place to Japanese. |
